Strawberry Tree --Arbutus Unedo

I needed a jump-start to get me back into drawing. I found a wonderful venue: botanical illustration. I took a class with Linda Vorobik, PhD at Filoli, a wonderful garden-lovers paradise in Woodside, Calif0rnia. The exactitude and attention were exactly what "big brush stroke" non-detail oriented me needed as a counter-balance. I am going to do more of this! This drawing was pen and ink, scanned and reproduced on watercolor paper, then painted with a light wash. I enhanced the colors in PhotoShop. I might have gone too far. Anyway, here's the color version. I'll upload the black and white version soon.

David

Geoff & I were in Italy this summer. I did too few drawings.... but I did catch this guy in Florence. I relished drawing him because it gave me an excuse to sit and appreciate this masterpiece.

Fictional Sky

This is a Photoshop painting. The bottom layer was broad brush strokes. Then there was one layer for light clouds and one for darker clouds, using a brush with texture.

Getty in Heaven

This was for my PhotoShop class. The source photo is a shot I took from a terrace at the Getty museum, showing the Getty garden & administration building. The assignment was to paint a postcard w/ no photo pixels from the original photo. (Composition & shapes could be followed --but using fill, brushes, etc.)

I wanted to create something very modern to convey how the experience of being at the Getty is so modern. I was inspired by Andy Warhol colors and style.

"The Thinker" meets "The Sleeper"

I like this challenge --it's a MONTHLY challenge to draw at museums. I did this a couple of times in college and I remember that it was fun. Just haven't done it in xx years. Yesterday I went to the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford where they have a great cafe, a lot of Rodins and a preponderance of sunshine for a museum. At the cafe, I saw this man taking a cat nap in the sun.

View from Mariscos Careyes

Here is the view from a small seafood shack. Great shrimp ceviche. That green house shows one example of the "Careyes Style" of architecture, which is stucco painted in bright light colors. Also, it has a thatch roof. You can see the gray structure on the right of the hill. It really looks like a rook chess piece. A gray turret exactly like a classic rook.
